Last October I had the opportunity to be part of Social Bites. Living Lotus was vending desserts at the after party sponsored by Hawkers Market. This was the first time I had ever heard of Social Bites and it sounded like it really great experience! I was wishing that I had heard about it earlier so that I could participate as a hobby chef.
When I heard about the upcoming Social Bites dinner party on April 5, I jumped at the chance to develop a menu for dinner utilizing my raw culinary training (and not to mention something savoury) !
Here's a brief overview of how it works: 30 hobby chefs host meals in their respective homes. The attendees pay for their chosen meal and show up for dinner. Then all 30 hobby chefs plus their guests meet up at an after party.
The best part? The entire ticket price goes to the hobby chef's chosen charity. This is done through Chimp.
My chosen charity is the Canadian Angelman Syndrome Society. Angelman Syndrome (AS) is a rare neurological disorder that affects approximately 1 in 25,000 people. They have cured it in a mouse model and because it's so rare it is hard to get funding for it.
You can find more information about AS here.
My nephew Casey has AS and this is why I am doing Social Bites.
April is the perfect time to be out and about, especially in Vancouver. I know it takes a certain type of person to want to go to a stranger's home for dinner. We seem to come out of hibernation when the sun is shining out. (We are all made of sugar, we'll melt in the rain, right?)
And where else can you get a gourmet raw, vegan meal prepared by a raw food chef around here?
On the menu will be:
- Avocado, orange, fennel salad
- Creamy carrot ginger soup
- Cheese dumplings in a smoked tomato basil broth
- Dessert (of course) !! We'll keep this one a secret. (Think pineapple, coconut & chocolate)
You can find tickets at www.dinnerpartyyvr.com
What are you doing to celebrate spring?
